BABA HASAN BASARIY

1. Hasan of Basrah (21 / 642-110 / 728) Hasan of Basrah belonged to the class of those who did not see the prophet, but his companions (Sahabah) and the companions of his companions (Tabi`in). Although he played no active role in politics, but in his fight against the Umayyads, he was sympathetic to Imam Husain. Hasan represented a tendency toward the outside world, piety and asceticism in which the element of fear of God predominated. In a letter to 'Umar b. "Abd al-Aziz, the Umayyad caliph, he said:" Beware of this world, for it is like a snake, smooth to the touch, but the poison is deadly ... Beware of this world, because its hope is lies, expectations are false. Later, in the same letter, he praised hunger and poverty as symbols of the righteous and regarded wealth as an evil that distracts people from their legitimate purpose. 1 He considered piety as the essence of true religion.2 According to him, it has three degrees. The first is that a man must speak the truth even though he is excited by anger. The second degree of piety requires that he checks his body organs and abstains from things that God has forbidden. The third and final phase of piety is that he should only desire those things that lead to God's pleasure (rida '). A little piety is better than prayer and fasting of a thousand years.
3 It is the lust for this world and greed that destroys piety.
4 Hasan was so overwhelmed by fear and rarely seen laughing when he sat he seemed like he was before an executioner Sat.
5 He was always aware of his sins and the fear of hell. He thought he would be happy if he were released from hell after a thousand years of trial.
6 Someone asked him how he felt in this world. He answered: Imagine a people in a boat that has turned and everyone is trying to save themselves by clinging to broken pieces of wood. That is the real position of man in this world
